Asteroid Hermes (1937UB) Rediscovered
Discovered in 1937, this earth orbit-crossing asteroid has been 'lost in space' for 66 years. However, it was recovered on Oct. 15th as it was approaching Earth for a fairly close fly-by. On Nov. 4, 2005 it passed just 7.2 million km (18 times the earth-moon distance) from the earth, at which time it was within easy reach of moderately large amateur telescopes. The four frames below show it around its time of closest approach, at Nov. 3 19:30 EST (Nov. 4 0:30 UT). Hermes is visible as a short streak right of center on each of the frames (the bright streak on the left is an artifact from a bright star in the field). Hermes appears as a streak because at that time it was moving at 30 arcsec/minute (0.5 degrees/hour).
